A fall is an occurrence that is usually characterized by failure to maintain appropriate lying, sitting or standing, resulting in individual abrupt, undersized relocation to the ground. This may lead to loss of balance and following the absence of intervention. The management of this disorder is subdivided into several categories which include fall risk predictive factors assessment, management investigation and part fall assessment.
Under fall risk predictive assessment, there is assessed eight clinical condition parameters which include level of consciousness or simply means mental status, ambulatory elimination status, balance status, vision status and acuteness, orthostatic blood pressure, falls in body medications and predisposing diseases. Results from such tests are tabulated into column and compared against a scale of one to ten. A score of ten is usually not good as it is an indicative if high chance of suffering from fall in the future hence the need in initiates the undertaking of trying to attend to the process of reduction of likelihood of fall related injuries.
The second step is known as the optional initial plan of care and it involves the general advisable precautionary measures. It specifies on the protocol and the environmental safety features that needs to be observed. The resulting data and information are normally recorded into the nurse’s notes or the physician’s order.
Another very important step in the campaign against fall and fall related injuries is the act of encouraging the participation of older people in fall prevention programs such as education and information. In this case the individuals at risk of being victims of fall related problems and their careers are offered information regarding the problem and the preferred precautionary measures they are advised to take. This information can be relayed either orally or in writing. Strength and balance training should be offered to the old adults as one preventive mechanism. This involves relaying muscle-strengthening and balance program information to the audience. It is normally characterized by either offering such practices under supervision or offering prescriptions for the activities the making necessary follow up.
Another very important measure is hazard and safety intervention whereby discharged victims from hospitals are offered hazard assessment at home and the prescribed conditions closely supervised. There should also be psychotropic medications offered which can either be renewed or discontinued depending on the situations arising. All the old adults should be encouraged to participate in fall management and prevention programs.
